What Is a Gold Coin Bubble and How Is It Calculated?
Key takeaways
  • Bubble = market price − intrinsic gold value.
  • Intrinsic value = weight × 0.9 × ounce × dollar ÷ 31.1035.
  • A high bubble raises the risk of a drop when the market calms down.

Compare a coin’s price with the gold it contains and the coin is usually more expensive. That gap is the coin bubble, and every coin buyer should understand it: part of what you pay is not for gold but for market demand.

How a coin’s intrinsic value is calculated

Bahar Azadi coins are minted at 900 fineness, meaning 90% of their weight is pure gold. Multiply the coin’s weight by 0.9 to get the pure gold weight, then by the price of one gram of pure gold, which comes from the global ounce price and the free-market dollar.

Intrinsic value = coin weight × 0.9 × ounce price × free-market dollar ÷ 31.1035

A worked example

Suppose gold is $3,700 an ounce and the free-market dollar is 105,000 Toman. One gram of pure gold = 3,700 × 105,000 ÷ 31.1035 ≈ 12,490,000 Toman. The Emami coin’s intrinsic value = 8.133 × 0.9 × 12,490,000 ≈ 91,400,000 Toman. If the coin trades at 104,800,000 Toman, its bubble is about 13,400,000 Toman, or 14.7%.

Why do coins have a bubble?

  • Strong demand for savings and gifts, especially when inflation rises.
  • Coins are easier to sell than melted gold or jewellery.
  • Minting costs and limited supply from the Central Bank.
  • Short-term hype after political and economic news.

What the bubble means for buyers

When the market calms down, the bubble usually shrinks faster than the gold price, so someone who bought at a high bubble can lose money even if the ounce and the dollar stay flat. For long-term saving, buying when the bubble is low makes more sense. Every coin page on EZRate shows its live intrinsic value and bubble.

Why half and quarter coins have a higher bubble

Smaller coins are popular for gifts and gradual saving and their supply is tighter, so the bubble in percent of the half coin and quarter coin is usually higher than that of the Emami coin. For investing, a full coin normally has a lower bubble and is easier to sell.

Where to follow the coin bubble

The coin price page shows the market price, intrinsic value and bubble of every coin side by side, updated every minute. The intrinsic value comes from the gold ounce and the free-market dollar, so the bubble can move even when the coin price stays the same.

Common mistakes

  • A negative bubble is not always a bargain; the market may expect the dollar to fall.
  • Comparing today with one hectic day is misleading — look at several weeks on the chart.
  • The coin bubble is not a making fee and it is not refunded when you sell.

Frequently asked questions

  • How often does the coin bubble change? Every minute, as the coin price, the ounce and the dollar move; the coin page calculates it live.

Summary

The coin bubble tells you how much of the price is the gold inside the coin and how much is market demand. Before buying, compare the live bubble with recent days, and if it is high, buy in steps or compare it with the gold bubble of melted gold. Every number in this guide is live on the coin pages, so you can repeat the calculation with today’s ounce and dollar in a few seconds.
